Minister Paul Clark, visiting Bristol yesterday, announced programme entry approval for the Ashton Vale to Temple Meads and Bristol City Centre Rapid Transit Scheme.

The £48 million scheme was identified in the West of England's Joint Local Transport Plan in 2005. Steer Davies Gleave (SDG) was engaged in early 2006 to undertake a feasibility study of the case for rapid transit in the West of England. They identified a priority order for delivery of the corridors within the proposed rapid transit network, the first of these being the route to Ashton Vale.

Steer Davies Gleave’s Urban Dynamic Model (UDM) is being used to explore the relationship between transport, employment, housing, mode shares and carbon emissions for South Yorkshire and Merseyside.

In South Yorkshire the UDM was first applied in 2007 when it was used to demonstrate how large scale investment in transport infrastructure could have a major impact on the local economy, showing gains in employment, with associated productivity and agglomeration benefits.  Extensions to this original commission are being used to update and enhance this model.

The World Health Organisation estimates that this could rise to 2.4 million deaths by 2020. Clearly road safety is a major health issue and an important challenge for the transport industry.

Physical activity is a fundamental means of improving physical and mental health. It reduces the risks of many diseases and benefits society by increasing social interaction and community engagement. Unfortunately, over half the population of Europe is not active enough to meet EU health recommendations, and the trend is towards less activity, not more. Encouragingly, in a recent survey within local government, 89% of respondents agreed that transport planning has a responsibility to promote health.
