Optimising the economic operation of airports in Colombia
United Nations' Development Programme
Colombia has 103 civil airports – a large number relative to the size of the country’s aviation sector – however many of these are not used significantly for commercial services.
Our role
The project was funded by the Ministry of Planning and the United Nations' Development Programme, who wanted to improve the finanical and economic performance of these airports in order to promote the overall financial performance of Colombia.
Steer Davies Gleave successfully supported this objective by reviewing the operational, organisational and economic characteristics of the regional airports in Colombia and advising on their future organisation.
How we did it
The scope of our work encompassed:
- a review and analysis of the existing airport facilities and levels of utilisation
- a review of the investment required to bring the airports up to an acceptable standard
- an assessment of the current financial viability of the airports and projection of how this might change in the future
- a review of how airports are organised and funded in other comparable countries
- development of recommendations for the future status of each of the airports, considering options such as upgrades, merger, closure and transfer to regional authorities.
